A new era for "From Here To There"

As I plan my move out to the Pacific Northwest, I continually dread the idea that I will no longer be surrounded by the Cartography Lab here at UW-Madison. The resources available in this department are invaluable. I'll be without the many people that have helped me get where I am today–broadened my horizons when it comes to data representation–and now I find myself enveloped in a world of web-page design, graphic design, and cartographic and spatial representation.

With this move comes transition in all forms. A new home means a new geography. With a new geography comes new adventures. I'm currently repainting my bicycle, and am struggling with the fact that I wont be working on the nice work computers here in the lab and have even considered purchasing a PC.

Over the past year I've grown fond of the data visualization world. I've embarked on a web-mapping journey, and have been learning basic javascript to enable a more dynamic web-page. To keep my thoughts concise and centralized, "From Here To There" will now become a data visualization blog. That's about as ambiguous of a theme I could think of that will be surface to anything I'm working on and interested in.

Eventually I would like to burst into the full programming and dynamic visualization world, but for now I'm going to start with simple data collection and basic representation. Who knows where I'll go from there. There will be maps. There will be graphs. I'll probably still have a random post about something totally unrelated, and then create a visualization of it.

"From Here To There" can haz data.
